Day 175/365 – On Skullcap

An interesting herb in the mint family, aptly called Skullcap (Scutellaria lateriflora), acts by ‘putting cap on your skull.’ In other words, it quiets the restless mind that has constant whirring thoughts, which is often the reason for insomnia.

  1. Abundant in North America, gathered while in flower, whole herb used

  2. Cooling

  3. Tonic, nervine, antispasmodic, astringent

  4. Controls nervous irritation, insomnia, excitability, restlessness, wakefulness, hysteria, epilepsy, rickets, bites of poisonous insects/snakes, all nervous afflictions

    1. Breaks fever, induces perspiration in children

    2. Used with pennyroyal (Hedeoma pulegioides) as tea → tx menstrual cramps

    3. Nightmares

    4. Nerve pain

  5. Turns off whirring thoughts

  6. For ‘hyperfunctioning nervous reactions’ – jumpy, twitchy, startle easily → mellows reactions
